The Peer Support

Trusted by
real people,
for real people,

Homesickness, long distance relationships and fatigue are common issues encountered in the maritime industry. The stigma surrounding mental health and worries about job security can mean that sea farers are less likely to ask for psychological support. Studies have shown that mental health can deteriorate during long spells at sea. Peer support allows those that have poor mental health to reach out to a trained, trusted and understanding individual in a similar role.

Why Peer Support?

Peer support systems for pilots and their relatives have been in existence for several years producing notable success in addressing:

  • Performance related issues
  • Substance and alcohol abuse
  • Post incident trauma
  • Daily life problems e.g. domestic, bereavement, financial etc

It is estimated that a quarter of seafarers suffer with depression at any one time

of those working at sea have experienced symptoms of anxiety when at work

of shipping workers have had recent thoughts of suicide or self-harm according to one study.
